FBI Influencing Social Media

FBI Influencing Social Media

On the Joe Rogan Experience, Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the FBI is influencing social media networks like Facebook. While Zuckerberg gave the agency some grace, it brings into question social media censorship and First Amendment rights. After all, the FBI had some direct involvement in censoring the Hunter Biden Story on Facebook.

Hunter Biden Laptop Story

Zuckerberg’s retelling of events paints a clear and disturbing picture of the FBI’s involvement in social media. According to the Facebook CEO, the FBI came to the social media network to warn against “Russian propaganda” before the 2020 presidential election. The agency told Facebook to be “vigilant.” When Rogan asked Zuckerberg if the FBI was directly warning them about the Hunter Biden story, the CEO said “No. I don’t remember if it was that specifically, but it fit the pattern.”

It was this prompting that made Facebook censor the laptop story when it was released by the New York Post. After fact-checkers confirmed that the story was true, Zuckerberg had regrets about pushing down the story. However, Zuckerberg remarked:

Hey, look, if the FBI — which I still view as a legitimate institution in this country, it’s very professional law enforcement — they come to us and tell us we need to be on guard about something, I want to take that seriously.

Zuckerberg’s statement shows how devious the agency is with its actions and it’s very clear that they have done this before.

FBI is Manipulating Social Media

While Zuckerberg admits his regret, the billionaire did not shy away from disparaging other social media networks. While Facebook did not push the New York Post story, it never censored it. It could still be accessed through sharing and commenting. However, Twitter and other networks put an outright ban on the story. People were not allowed to share or post the Hunter Biden story anywhere on the platform.

The FBI discussed potential “Russian propaganda” with other social media networks. However, the agency gets to dictate what is a “threat” to the country. It is very easy to see how this power can be abused. After all, what are companies supposed to do? Say no to a government agency that could sanction and negatively impact their business.

Violating First Amendment Rights

This is the government’s way of trying to circumvent the First Amendment. While the government cannot directly censor others, the FBI is influencing social media networks to do it for them. This is government censorship by proxy. It is still violating people’s First Amendment rights. Even if people like Zuckerberg are aware of the dynamic, there is nothing they can do. Stories and interviews like these need to be in the spotlight. The American people need to know that their rights can be trampled on by one word from the FBI and other agencies. The government is overstepping and it needs to be stopped!
